JOSEP MARIA MIRALLES

Josep Maria Miralles (b. 1937, Spain) is a European illustrator whose career spans the golden age of mid-20th-century commercial and editorial illustration. Trained in a pre-digital era defined by technical precision and narrative clarity, Miralles developed a distinctive visual language rooted in realism, atmosphere, and strong compositional storytelling.

Beginning in the 1950s and 60s, he worked extensively for British and Nordic publishers, contributing to a wide range of editorial and commercial commissions. His work later reached the American market, where he produced illustrations for major publishing houses, including paperback covers and narrative imagery aligned with the visual culture of the time.

From the late 1970s onward, Miralles continued his career across Spain and France, collaborating with publishers and working for years under the representation of Norma Editorial/Norma Comics (Barcelona), a key European agency in the field of illustration and comics.

His oeuvre reflects a transitional moment in illustration history — from handcrafted analog processes to the threshold of digital production — and is characterized by its technical mastery, expressive lighting, and strong narrative sensibility.
